Services and Programs
Adoption Program
The CAHS will offer shelter, medical
care, and love to every animal. The shelter will receive
owner-surrendered animals to give them a second chance.
All animals will visit the doctor, be
tested for incurable diseases, spayed/ neutered, vaccinated,
wormed, and readied for their new homes. To better
promote lifelong relationships, the shelter staff
will work to match the lifestyles of humans and animals.
Adoption Services
-
After adoption, a behavior hot
line will be available to help with the transition
home and with any problems that may arise.
-
Staff and volunteers will work
together through training and socialization to
bring out the best in all the animals and enhance
their chances for adoption. Support and training
will also be provided after adoption.
Education Programs
The Maurice and Paula Lovejoy Learning
Center will provide classes covering a wide range
of topics in an endeavor to create a kinder world
and greater understanding. Learning is the key to
understanding, and understanding will help to break
the cycles of abuse, violence and neglect.

Special Programs
-
Domestic Violence - The
CAHS will be working with Starting Point, the
Valley's domestic violence organization, to house
animals of abuse victims. Animal and child abuse
go hand in hand. As Mary Mayhew, Executive Director
of Starting Point, says, "Many people don't make
it to the shelter because they won't leave their
pets." The CAHS, with a referral from Starting
Point, will house the animal victims of an abusive
situation while the family gets its life back
on track. All such housing will be secure and
confidential. A contract will require the owner
to check in every two weeks for a situation update
and to discuss future plans for both humans and
companion animals.
-
Medical Emergency - The
CAHS will be working with local doctors to help
people in need of medical attention, but who choose
not to get it for fear of leaving their animals.
Low cost animal housing will be provided for these
circumstances with the doctor's referral.
-
Guardian Program - This
special program will provide for pets when their
people are no longer here to do so. The CAHS will
find the best possible home for all adoptable
animals. This service is available for all members
of the CAHS. Members wishing to use this service
should specify in their wills that their pets
are to be entrusted to the CAHS. There is a limit
of two animals per household.
The Conway Area Humane Society will
be there for people and animals in need. The planned
facility is large enough and the organization flexible
enough to accommodate all of these situations as they
arise.
